2010-11 FTC PILATES TEACHER TRAINING PROGRAM

Program Description

From The Center’s Pilates Teacher Training Program is a fully comprehensive 676 hours program that is recognized internationally and also meets the Pilates Method Alliance’s requirements for Pilates Teacher Training. The program was established in 2002 by Master Pilates Teacher Trainer and Program Director Patrick O’Brien, and redesigned in 2007 to provide more support for students as they learn the full Pilates repertoire (on the Mat and all of the equipment) and to provide opportunities for students to study under established and recognized Pilates Instructors and Physical Therapists currently working in their respected industries.

FTC’s Teacher Training Program consists of Intensive Workshops:

o   5 Modules of Pilates Exercise Levels (fundamentals to advanced)
          o   Anatomy Class
          o   Study Classes (optional)

Along with the student’s choice of 2 annual Elective Workshops in:

          o   Postural Analysis
          o   Mechanics of Gait
          o   Spinal Conditions
          o   Pre & Post Natal

The goals of the Pilates Training Program are to:

o   Teach students the concepts, principles and ideas of the Pilates Method.
o   Teach students the classical Pilates exercises on all of the Pilates equipment.
o   Teach students the classical Pilates level structures from beginning to advanced.
o   Provide students with the necessary verbal skills (anatomical, bio-mechanical, etc.) to translate those concepts, principles
& ideas, whether that be through language with imagery or anatomy, to teach the Pilates Method so that the information
is understood by a Pilates’ client.
o   To help the student develop an eye-for-movement so that they can better analyze a Pilates’ client in motion to
determine how to help a client incorporate the concepts, principles and ideas that are inherent within each
Pilates exercise.  Proper decisions will then be made to help the client ‘house’ and sequence the concepts, principles and
               ideas to produce an exercise.
o   Teach student the skills needed to teach a private session and a group mat class.
o   Understand and translate movement ideas and concepts such as structure & function or stability & mobility.
o   Provide assistance with proper modifications, usage of props and tools and proper touch techniques.
o   Understanding of anatomy and bio-mechanics.
o   Teach students meditation techniques to learn about the dynamics of energy when working one-on-one with a client.
o   Have a sense of the overall structure of a presenting movement from sequencing, rhythm, counting, voice inflections and
               intonations, transitions, etc.
o   How and when to change the Pilates equipment to achieve the goal of the exercise.
          o   Analyze the Pilates structures.
o   Know how and when to proceed a client to a more advanced level.
o   Complete understanding of human anatomy – skeletal & muscular systems.

Workshop Descriptions

Five Modules of Pilates exercises encompass the bulk of the training presented in 3 days Weekend Intensive Workshops. An Anatomy Class is included within each Weekend Intensive providing students with an understanding of the human skeletal and muscular systems. Centered on the Intensive Workshops are Clinic Hours, Model Hours and a once-a-month Pilates Group Study class.

Fundamentals

In the Fundamentals workshop, students will learn about Joseph Pilates history, the technique itself, analysis of the structures of advancing a client through the technique and the concepts, principals and ideas within the technique. The format of ‘How to Teach Pilates’ to a client will studied from an hourly outline whittled down to dissecting that hour into analysis of exercises choice relationships to transitions to create a strong flowing session that is translatable to a client. This information is the foundation to not only understanding the man, the technique but to embody the work and create a language to transfer the information to a client.

Modules

Modules 1-4 are progressive level exercises structured from Beginner Level exercises to Advanced. All classical mat-work and equipment exercises will be taught in the latter four Modules.

Class Descriptions

Anatomy Class

It is important for all students working with the human body have an understanding of anatomy. Basic anatomical material will be covered - planes of movement, movement language and description, muscle groupings, insertion, origin and function, etc. During each Module, students will be shown “Acland’s DVD Atlas of the Human Anatomy” by Lippincott, Williams & Wilkins. LWW says, “The six DVDs in this remarkable and beautifully produced DVD anatomy atlas explore the fundamental structures of the Musculoskeletal System, the Head and Neck, and the Internal Organs.”

Group Study Class

Studio time will be set aside on a monthly reoccurring basis throughout the program directed by a FTC certified Pilates Instructor. This time will be used to teach a Pilates Mat Class, a Pilates Reformer Class, Equipment usage time, Question & Answer time, acquiring of Apprentice Hour with Models and/or a discussion around a specific topic related to the workshops and classes.

Clinic Hours

Students are required to acquire hours in the following categories throughout the program: Mat Classes, Private Sessions, Observation and Assisting a Certified Instructor for their own physical development and understanding of the application of the material covered in the Intensive Workshops.

All Clinic Hours are to be acquired at a FTC Pilates Studio or a FTC affiliate off-site Pilates Studio only. No other hours acquired at any other Pilates Studio will be counted towards Clinic Hours.

**FTC does not charge student ($0) to use the equipment to study where some other Pilates Teacher Training Programs do charge an hourly fee

Model Hours

Model Hours are a necessary part of the training program to assist the student in the application of the material covered in the workshops and classes. Students enrolled in the program will have access to FTC Pilates Studios with their family and friends as “Models.” These models will be ‘test subjects’ that the students will progress through the Pilates Method. Because of the outside relationships students have with these models, they will guide, dialogue, questions, etc in ways a client may or may not.

Students are required to acquire hours in the following categories throughout the program: Mat Classes and Private Sessions.

It is recommended that students enrolled in the program have minimally 4 ‘healthy’ models of various strengths, body sizes, flexibility levels, etc. due to scheduling conflicts, holidays and ability levels as the program progress to an advanced level. Other students in the program may be utilized around Module 4 due to the content of the material.

One of the students ‘Models’ will be asked to participate in the Mid-term & the Final Exam.

*All Model Hours are to be gathered at FTC or a FTC affiliate off-site Pilates Studio.

**FTC does not charge student ($0) to use the equipment to study where some other Pilates Teacher Training Programs do charge an hourly fee.
